The nation's first School of Social Transformation,  we bring together interdisciplinary fields to integrate the study of gender, race, and class with an eye toward finding just solutions to complex social problems. We address critical social issues such as poverty, discrimination, educational disparity, health and disability, conflict and violence.

African and African American Studies
We investigate the riveting complexities of Africa, its migratory diaspora and the robust lives of African peoples that have emerged from such dislocations. Trained in a variety of disciplines, our faculty examines a wide array of critical issues of African descended peoples across the stages of life at various times and places in history.

Asian Pacific American Studies
We gather and develop research, scholarship and archival information on the long history and rich contemporary experiences, cultures and communities of Asian Pacific Americans in the Southwest. This is the second-fastest growing ethnic group in the United Sates, yet lack of research about these communities is a concern. We seek to produce research that will inform policymakers, educators and our society at large about these communities.

Culture, Society and Education
The Culture, Society and Education research cluster of the School of Social Transformation brings together a group of engaged faculty exploring the relationships between cultural, social, political and educational dynamics, both locally and internationally. We study the way learning environments in and out of schools impact the opportunities and experiences of children, youth and adult learners who represent the full range of human abilities, gendered identities, cultures, ethnicities, languages and socioeconomic backgrounds. We investigate these issues from interdisciplinary frameworks, drawing on anthropology, cultural studies, economics, linguistics, psychology, and sociology.

Justice and Social Inquiry
We are an innovative interdisciplinary unit that places social justice at the center of our scholarship and teaching. For more than 25 years, we have been the intellectual hub for the study of justice at ASU and beyond by producing cross-disciplinary knowledge and educating generations of social change agents and justice studies scholars.

Women and Gender Studies
Our program is one of the largest, most vibrant women and gender studies programs in the country—and one of the few to offer a doctoral degree in gender studies. We teach more than 3,000 students each year on topics which include: gender, health, sexuality, science and technology, work, globalization, ecology, social policy, violence prevention, media, film, performance and the arts.
