Let’s be real - starting your first year of college is a terrifying prospect. Whether you’re eager to explore that thrilling college independence or not quite ready to go off on your own, there is more than enough for the average student to worry about. So, here is a guide curated by a second year ASU student, chock full of advice to give you a sense of peace as you make this potentially challenging (but exciting!) transition. We’ve got you.

Get to know your neighbors! As move-in day approaches for in-person students, you’ll be hauling your belongings around at the same time as other students living on your same floor, building and complex. So why not offer a friendly greeting! Once you’re all settled in, it’s even common for suitemates to knock on each other’s doors and meet the students living around them. Also, introduce yourself to others in the dining hall! Ask to sit next to people and see who you can find studying the same major as you! Remember - everyone’s in the same boat, so there are more people than you’d expect feeling the exact same way you are. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and be the one to begin those connections. You never know, maybe you’ll find your next best friend!

Learn your way around campus! ASU campuses are big, which can be intimidating. But once you start to familiarize yourself, it’s not as bad as you think! Take the few days you have onsite before classes start to walk through your class schedule and explore what your campus has to offer (you may even find a secret garden or a fascinating bit of architecture tucked away)! There are also many transportation options around campus and Tempe available to students, some of them are even free!

Keep an open mind! Once classes start, you may get new ideas about what you want to study. Or, you may even have doubts going in about whether you’re really pursuing what you want to. That’s completely normal! Keep your mind open for other majors that might be right for you (double majoring is an option), or consider adding a minor or certificate! ASU has so many fascinating course options, so keep your eye out for ones that might interest you, even if they’re outside your major. Also, get to know the college or school that houses your major, as there may be events and opportunities unique to your area of study!

Ask for help! There are many people in your academic career who are there to assist you when you need it. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your professors, TAs (teaching assistants), and CAs (community assistants). Professors and TAs will be with you in class and often have office hours where you can receive extra help. A CA will be an older student living on your floor, and they are there as a resource to ensure your safety and connect you with any resources you may need. Also, keep your mind and body healthy by reaching out through the support network ASU has built specifically for students. If you find yourself in need of any kind of mental health support or medical help, ASU Counseling Services and ASU Health Services offers free professional help for students. If you find yourself in need of accommodations, such as transportation to class or an extra quiet space for exams, Student Accessibility and Inclusive Learning Services (SAILS) has your back. Also, consider utilizing the free tutoring services ASU has available for you, if you want support in any subject (if you’re in Barrett, there is separate tutoring just for you)!

Get involved! College is an excellent opportunity to find new hobbies and build upon your current ones. If you have a special interest, there’s probably a club for it! If you are at all interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, pay attention to news as rush season approaches in the fall! And there are so many athletic options for those looking to play or just get in on that classic college experience. Look out for sporting events you may be interested in, and consider attending an event for a sport you aren’t as familiar with, as students get free tickets through the ASU Gameday app (and guest passes at little or no cost). Who knows, ASU might make a fan out of you!

As classes start, pay attention to any administrative items you need to take care of - look out for add/drop class deadlines, financial aid options still available, Priority Tasks in MyASU, and if you’re in Barrett make sure you keep an eye on those honors contract deadlines (reach out to your advisor for help)! Now take a deep breath, relax and enjoy your first year of college at ASU! We’re so excited to introduce you as a new Sun Devil, and we’re here for you every step of the way to make this experience amazing. Forks up!
